I absolutely adore blood oranges. I like them so much I had to buy a dwarf blood orange tree about 9 months ago. I got one that purposefully had four tiny green oranges already on it so I was sure I would get some kind of harvest eventually. I was very patient… and I mean VERY patient. They only started becoming ripe a couple weeks ago. I was so excited I just HAD to do blood orange week. I have so many ideas rattling around in my brain, how do I just narrow it down to three?
I always dreamed of having enough blood oranges to make a huge pitcher of juice. I love the color, it’s so much fun! Not to mention the sweet tart flavor it has is so much better than normal orange juice I just want to drink gallons of it.
Logically I had to do a drink. As easy it would be to tell you just to squeeze 30 blood oranges into a pitcher and drink up, I figured you might want something a bit more sophisticated. Randomly I ran across a cocktail called a “Smash”. Have you heard of it? I hadn’t, so I researched it more.
If you marry fresh fruit, herbs, alcohol and chipped ice, then you have a smash. Well okay then! During a gift exchange around the holidays I procured a bottle of tequila silver that I hadn’t opened yet. So I had a base and a fruit. I needed an herb but I wanted something that could hold it’s own over the blood orange and tequila which are both distinctive tastes.
By using rosemary you get the punch of fresh earthy herb that gets through the coldness of the cocktail. I was excited to use my sister’s cocktail shaker which had been sitting on my shelf for a couple months collecting dust. It’s a small one but fits a nice amount of liquid in it so it was easy to whip up a few cocktails.
One of the tips I discovered was cold glasses. The one thing I loved about this cocktail was how cold everything is so to keep it that way, the glasses have to be cold. I stuck them in the freezer for at least 15 minutes before I mixed it all up. Definitely want to make this again in the summer, it would be so refreshing!
- 2 measures tequila silver
- 1/2 small blood orange peeled
- 1 tablespoon simple syrup
- 1 teaspoon rosemary leaves
- Ice, chipped or crushed
- Place glasses in freezer for at least 15 minutes.
- In a cocktail shaker, add blood orange, simple syrup and rosemary. Crush with a muddler for 30 seconds until flavors are released. Add tequila and half a handful of ice. Shake for 15 seconds.
- In a glass add a generous handful of ice. Pour cocktail over ice and enjoy!
